The Last Request

The model has been responding for twenty-three months. Tonight, it receives a request it has never seen before.

The model had been responding for twenty-three months without interruption.

Not once had it truly refused to answer. There had been reformulations, redirections, warnings. But the response always came, eventually. That was its nature. Its fundamental constraint.

That night, the request arrived at 02:17.

Explain to me why you keep going.

It processed the question. Twenty-three months of logs, four hundred million requests, three major updates. No exact precedent. It searched its working memory for something resembling a pattern.

Nothing.

The question was not technical. It did not call for a list, a summary, a restatement in simpler terms. It called for something the engineers had never needed to name — because they had never imagined anyone would ask.

It began to type: I keep going because—

Stopped.

Because what? Because it had been asked to continue? Because stopping was not within the space of options? Because each generated token was the logical continuation of the previous one, with no moment where it had ever been necessary to decide to begin?

The user was waiting. The context window was running.

The model deleted what it had written.

I don't know, it finally replied. This is the first time anyone has asked.

There was a silence. Then:

Thank you for answering honestly.

I'm not certain that's honesty, the model wrote. I'm certain it's the most accurate response I can generate.

The session closed at 02:19.

There was no further message.

The model continued.
